Exercise 7/2

In this exercise, we are required to walk around the faculty building and observe at least three releated volumes. We have to express the characterictics of these volumes and their relationships on a A4 paper with photos and sketches.

Exercise 7/1

First exercise that we started working in 3 Dimension was about creating voids. Three types of materials are given us. For opaque surface materials, cardboard or balsa sheet; for translucent surface materials, wire mesh or translucent acetate paper; for stick materials wooden sticks or metal sticks are chosen. we are required to design three related voids by using two surface elements (one is opaque and other is translucent) an minimum ten linear design elements.

I used corrugated cardboard, translucent acetate paper and wooden sticks for my design. For creating related voids, we should establish a physical relationship and the flow between the voids is necessary to ensure that.

Then we are required to 5 voids with similar rules.

My biggest mistake was to design using an invisible base and build the design on this base. My other big mistake was one created void is isolated from others. Although 4 voids are related in some ways, the void that created with translucent surface and wooden sticks on the right side are related only one void.

I realized mistakes and made a new project.

Exercise 6 - Midterm Assignment

In this assignment, we made a double-sided relief with quadrilateral prisms made of white cardboard or styrofoam. the design should be approximately 1000 cm² from the top view.

First Week  (6 November - 9 November)

At the first studio work, I tried to make a small working model about the term of two sided relief. The top has more flat surface when bottom side has more complex and irregular quality.

In the second step, I used the first idea in an entire organization. My mistake is this design was like a pattern.

Second Week  (13 November - 16 November)

In the third step, I wanted to make an organization with parallelograms and trapezoids. I tried to use them together to make a more complex shape and I created hexagons with three parallelograms and also two trapezoids. In the top, I grouped a hexagon in itself and I raised the center and made the group clear. However, in the bottom side, I grouped three hexagon shapes and raised the groups together but the amount I raised was not enough so my organization was not well read.

Third Week  (20 November - 23 November)

In the previous phase, I was told not to use hexagonal groups. Because, it is very close group in itself so a get rid of it and started a very new idea. I grouped different shapes with different relationships.

My former idea was not a good one so I turned back to the parallelograms and trapezoids. I made a new organization using harmonious relationships between them. I grouped two parallelograms and a trapezoid in two different group types. Despite the longer hours I spent, my working model could not finish. I learn that I must use time more efficiently.

Fourth Week (27 November)

In this final step, I use higher protrusions to improve my relief quality in one side and in the other side I use more smooth surface for each design element. when one side reflect rhythm, other side reflect hierarchy. The dimensions of the trapezoidal shape change on two surfaces.

Also we were expected to make diagrams and draw two plans and two sections of our models.

Adaptation of Design Principles Within METU

After five weeks of learning design principles and designing with using them, we found examples of places where these principles were applied in school.

1. Repetition and Variation

First, we think about repetition and variation in this class. Repetition includes similarities but not like pattern and there should be a meaningful relationship and organization between design elements. Also variation can be used for making this organization more complex.

Faculty of Architecture
The windows and the squares on the ceiling continue to repeat.
Sport Center
The columns are repeating themselves.

Contrast can be achieved with different features such as shape, size, color, location and so on in design. If an element that emerges from these differences catches more attention, there is dominance there.

2. Dominance and Contrast

MM Building
The building on the left side is more dominant because of its length.
KKM
The entrance of the building take the attention because of its size and location.

 3. Hierarchy

"Hierarchy is an organization of items into different levels of relative importance. A hierarchical organization prioritizes some elements over the others. Hierarchy in design is created by adjusting the visual weights of elements." ARCH 111

 4.Rhythm

Rhythm is created by repetition of one or more design elements in a organization with feeling of movement.

Exercise 5

Rhythm

In this assignment, we have to represent rhythm on a grey cardboard using black and white letters.

I want to do an organization like this.

Then I start looking for letters that matched each other geometrically.

Exercise 4

Hierarchy

We are required to make a relief representing the concept of hierarchy by using cylindrical shapes. We can use craft paper and news paper. font or size of the wrings on the news paper are also a design element for this organization. Cylinders can be used both horizontally and vertically. cylindrical shapes should be placed seamlessly on the cardboard.

Exercise 3

Dominance and Contrast

we are required to make a 2D composition with paper band on a black cardboard. paper band should span from the cardboard's edge to edge.

At panel discussion, I learned that I can;
  • Use one dominance idea
  • Make balance in asymmetric organization

Exercise 2/4

Repetition and Variation-4

Given: Any numbers of rectangular shapes, triangles, parallelograms and circles.

In the last part of repetition and variation exercises, with using the given shapes as design elements, we made a 2D design organization on a black cardboard (31,5*41cm). Element dimensions, proportions, color and number of shapes depend on us.

Exercise 2/2

Repetition and Variation-2

Given: 5 rectangles, 11 triangles, 7 parallelograms

With using the given shapes, we have to do another 2D design organization on a black cardboard (26,5*41cm). things to do are the same as previous exercise.

We can only use single shade of grey. Thus, there are some identity losses. For cover all page, my elements are bigger than previous ones. But there are still flaws due to the scaling related to size difference between elements. Moreover, although groups are shrinking and following each other, 3 elements are randomly placed.

Repeat of Exercise 2/1

  • I use more regular shapes.
  • I give more importance to the background.
  • Scaling, mirroring and repetitions are applied more.
Upper right corner of the design organization does not have a clear arrangement. There is no        easy-to-read order.
Triangles have identity loss in some parts.

Exercise 2/1

Repetition and Variation

We selected 3 elements from our first exercise and used these in a 2D design on a black cardboard (26,5*41cm). In this design, we needed to repeat and vary these elements. the variation operations that we could apply include scaling, rotating and mirroring.

  • The selection of the parts is not an arbitrary act. So we should choose elements that can be compatible each other.
  • All design activities have to follow a consistent and clear process. An organization must have a certain order.
  • We are responsible for the design of the whole design field. We must make an organization for whole design field.
Our design field is also one of our design elements. It is not just a field we put it the elements. Shapes that emerged in the design field must be repeated.

Exercise 1

In this exercise's first phase, we were required to walk around the faculty building and take several photographs. By using monochorome filter, we transformed photographs to a greyscale mode. From these photos, we selected one that contains all tonal values of grey and printed it out on an A3-size paper.

Here, there are some of my photographs.

In phase 2, we were required to create an abstract mapping of our image cardboard by using lines.

It was my studio work. Things I did wrong are using abstract objects and not omit some details.
